Reps Summon Security Chiefs and Wike Over FCT Insecurity Crisis
In response to the escalating security crisis in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the House of Representatives has taken decisive action, summoning top security officials and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for urgent deliberations.
The decision came following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance by Mr. Dominic Okafor, representing Aguta Federal Constituency, Anambra State. Okafor highlighted the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the FCT's status as the seat of the Federal Government and the imperative for robust security measures in the nation's capital.
The motion underscored concerns about the increasing prevalence of crime in the FCT, including incidents of 'one chance,' armed robberies, banditry, kidnappings, and killings. It also pointed out the government's failure to effectively utilize the National Identification Number (NIN) system to address security challenges despite its implementation.
The House resolved to invite the FCT Minister, National Security Adviser, and heads of all security agencies for an emergency briefing and strategy session. Additionally, the FCT Minister was tasked with installing security cameras and other modern gadgets across the territory, while security agencies were directed to collaborate, establish special units, and utilize NIN technology to combat crime effectively.
This move comes amid growing concerns from residents and stakeholders about the deteriorating security situation in the FCT. It underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts and innovative strategies to restore safety and security to the nation's capital.
In response to mounting pressure, Minister Nyesom Wike had previously assured residents that efforts were underway to address the security challenges. However, the House's intervention reflects a broader call for proactive measures and concrete actions to safeguard the FCT and its inhabitants from the scourge of crime.
