The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has confirmed that it has reported the case of a missing female student to the police, calling on the public for assistance.

In a statement on Sunday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the missing student, Dorcas Oseghale, is in the Department of Chemistry with matric number CHM/2021/165. According to him, she was last seen on August 6, 2025, at about 8 pm, when she left her hostel at Adesanmi House, Ibadan Road, Ile-Ife, to buy food near the students’ village along the Ede Road axis of the university.

Olarewaju explained that when Dorcas did not return on time, her roommate attempted to reach her but discovered that both her phone lines were unreachable.

“At about 3 pm on August 7, 2025, the university’s Security Unit began tracking discussions on a students’ social media platform after receiving a report of a missing female student. By 6:10 pm, a group of Chemistry students, accompanied by her roommate, Akinkuade Omobolanle Beatrice from Agricultural Extension, formally reported the case to the Security Unit,” Olarewaju said.

The PRO noted that due to the complexity of the case and the unit’s resource limitations, three security personnel were assigned to work with the students and submit preliminary findings to the police.

Reacting to the development, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, praised the students for their swift response in noticing Dorcas’s absence and reporting it promptly.

“We commend the students for their proactiveness and appeal to the police and other security agencies to do all within their power to help find the missing student,” Bamire said.

The Vice Chancellor urged anyone with useful information about Dorcas’s whereabouts to contact the nearest police station or the university’s security unit.
