House of Representatives Urges Enhanced Public Engagement and Response Strategies for Emergency Agencies
The House of Representatives has issued a directive to key emergency response agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), and the Federal Fire Service, urging them to bolster their public engagement and response strategies.
This resolution came following the adoption of a motion titled "Call to Improve Nigeria's Emergency Response and Management," which was presented during Wednesday's plenary session by Jafaru Leko, the member representing Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency, Bauchi State.
Leko emphasized the crucial importance of swift and effective emergency response mechanisms in safeguarding the safety, security, and well-being of Nigerians. He highlighted recent emergency situations, such as the devastating explosion in Ibadan on January 16, 2024, as indicative of the urgent need for a robust and coordinated emergency response system.
Concerns were raised regarding impediments to timely response efforts, including inadequate access roads and logistical challenges. Additionally, the lack of public awareness and education on emergency preparedness and response was identified as a pressing issue, with many Nigerians unaware of essential contact information for emergency services.
In response, the House called upon the Federal Government to intervene, urging relevant emergency agencies to establish clear protocols and communication systems for information sharing during emergencies. Furthermore, the House advocated for the enhancement and modernization of Nigeria's emergency response infrastructure, including the establishment of state-of-the-art emergency operation centers and the procurement of adequate firefighting equipment and ambulances.
To ensure compliance and progress, the House mandated relevant committees to oversee the implementation of these measures and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
This proactive stance by the House of Representatives underscores a commitment to strengthening Nigeria's emergency response capabilities, ultimately aiming to mitigate the impact of emergencies and disasters on the nation and its citizens.
