EFCC Arrests Nuhu Haruna for Alleged N1bn Fraud, Former Kwara Governor Remains in Custody
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kaduna State Zonal Command, have apprehended Nuhu Haruna over an alleged fraudulent transaction amounting to N1 billion.
The anti-graft agency made the disclosure via its official Twitter handle on Wednesday, revealing that Haruna's arrest stemmed from a petition filed by an undisclosed individual in December 2023. According to the EFCC, the petitioner engaged Haruna in a foreign exchange transaction totaling N1,020,000.00, only to later discover discrepancies in the evidence of payment provided by Haruna.
Preliminary investigations uncovered that Haruna, purportedly an airline captain, diverted the funds for personal use, including acquiring property and vehicles for his alleged airline company, Air Unity Aviation Services. Among the assets traced to him were landed properties, three 18-seater Toyota Hiace buses, and four luxury cars.
Haruna is slated to face charges in court following further investigations by the EFCC.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Abdulfattah Ahmed, former governor of Kwara State, remains in the custody of the EFCC for a second consecutive night. Ahmed was summoned to the Ilorin zonal office of the EFCC on Monday and has not been released since.
In a separate development, the EFCC announced the arrest of six individuals in Lagos State for their alleged involvement in currency racketeering and the illicit sale of new naira notes for commercial purposes. Dele Oyewale, spokesperson for the EFCC, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.
The series of arrests underscore the EFCC's continued efforts to combat financial crimes and uphold transparency and accountability in Nigeria's economic landscape.
