DSS Urges Organised Labour to Postpone Planned Protests, Emphasizes Dialogue for Peace
The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a plea to organised labour, urging them to postpone their planned nationwide protests against the current economic challenges facing the country.
The call comes as organised labour commenced mobilization for protests scheduled for February 27 and 28 to address the ongoing cost of living crisis. Despite the Federal Government's failure to fulfill promises made after a 14-day ultimatum, the labour unions remained resolute in their decision to stage the protests.
In a statement released on Wednesday by DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya, the agency appealed to the union to prioritize peace and public order by shelving the protest plans. The DSS expressed concerns over potential elements aiming to exploit the protests to incite violence and escalate tensions across the nation.
Emphasizing the importance of dialogue and negotiation in resolving issues, the DSS highlighted ongoing efforts by government authorities and stakeholders to address the prevailing economic difficulties. The agency called for citizens to exercise patience and allow the appropriate authorities to tackle the challenges at hand.
Additionally, the DSS urged parents and guardians to guide their children away from activities that could jeopardize public safety. It called upon various sectors of society, including political parties, religious and traditional institutions, civil society organizations, and non-governmental bodies, to refrain from promoting violence and instead demonstrate leadership and statesmanship.
Warning against exploiting the current situation for political gain or engaging in divisive rhetoric, the DSS emphasized the need for vigilance to thwart attempts by hostile forces to destabilize the nation. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security in collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies.
As tensions simmer over the economic challenges facing Nigeria, the DSS's appeal for dialogue underscores the importance of peaceful means in addressing grievances and fostering national unity and stability.
