Construction Workers in Kano State Commence Three-Day Warning Strike Over Wage Award Implementation Dispute
5th February 2024 The National Union of Civil Engineering, Construction, Furniture, and Wood Workers in Kano State has initiated a three-day industrial action starting from Monday, drawing attention to their demands amid a dispute over the implementation of the Wage Award agreed between the Federal Government and organized Labour.
In a statement released by the General Secretary, Comrade Ibrahim Walama, and made available to The PUNCH, the union expressed the necessity of the strike action due to the employers' refusal to engage in discussions with the union regarding the implementation of the agreed Wage Award.
The statement read, “Following the decision reached at the joint NEC Meeting of NUCECFWW/CCESSA held on Thursday, 25th January 2024, over employers’ refusal to discuss with NUCECFWW/CCESSA the implementation of the Wage Award agreed between the Federal Government and organized Labour.
“The Joint NEC of both Unions has directed all members of the union to proceed on a three-day warning strike, starting from Monday, 5th February 2024, on the first instance to press home our demand.
“Consequent upon the above, all members across the board are advised to ensure total compliance. Meanwhile, officials and members should kindly endeavor to constantly check the relevant platforms of the union for necessary information and further directives,” the statement emphasized.
The strike action underscores the dissatisfaction of the union members with the perceived lack of progress in discussions related to the Wage Award. As construction workers stand united in their demand, the industrial action aims to bring attention to the pressing issues at hand. Employers are urged to engage in dialogue to resolve the dispute and ensure the welfare of the workers.
