Nigeria Data Protection Commission's 2023 Annual Report Reveals Surge in Data Protection Revenue to N6.2 Billion
*Abuja, 5th February 2024* - The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) marked its second anniversary with the unveiling of its 2023 Annual Report, showcasing significant growth in data protection cumulative revenue. The report disclosed that the revenue for 2023 soared to N6.2 billion, a notable increase from N5.5 billion recorded in 2022.
Established on February 4, 2022, the NDPC has been entrusted with the mission of safeguarding data privacy and protection within the country, aligning citizens' rights with global standards.
The report highlighted various areas of improvement, including a surge in Compliance Audit Reports, which witnessed an increase from 1,864 reports between 2020 and 2021 to 3,451 reports from 2022 to 2023.
Noteworthy achievements outlined in the report include the creation of 10,123 jobs in 2023, an increase from 9,577 jobs in the previous year. Additionally, the number of verified Data Protection Officers rose from 1,928 in 2022 to 1,955 in 2023, reflecting a commitment to strengthening the data protection ecosystem.
Mr. Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement, and Regulations at NDPC, expressed pride in the commission's accomplishments, emphasizing the foundation laid for data privacy and protection in the country. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to formulate a general application and implementation directive for the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA).
Bamigboye also noted the commission's enhanced auditing processes, with more organizations submitting audit reports. NDPC's admission into the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA) was highlighted, providing the country with opportunities for mutual legal assistance, enforcement collaboration, capacity building, and information sharing.
"The court also is beginning to recognize the importance of adequacy in terms of cross-border data transfer, and we are happy that the ecosystem is evolving and getting stronger,’’ Bamigboye remarked.
Among the notable achievements listed were the launch of the Nigerian Data Protection Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan 2023–2027, the commencement of bilateral cooperation with other jurisdictions, and the issuance of the Code of Conduct of Data Protection Compliance Organizations.
