Protest Erupts in Minna as Youths and Women Decry Soaring Living Costs and Hardship
Minna, 5th February 2024 - The streets of Minna, Niger State, witnessed a surge of protest as disgruntled youths and women voiced their concerns over the escalating cost of living and pervasive hardships in the country.
The demonstration kicked off with a group of women blocking the Minna-Bida Road at the renowned Kpakungu Roundabout. Their outcry centered around what they perceived as severe suffering under the administration of Bola Tinubu. Subsequently, men and additional youths joined the protest, halting vehicular movement in solidarity.
Initiating in the morning, the protest took on a vocal dimension as some of the youths began expressing their grievances in the Hausa language, highlighting the deteriorating state of the country's economy under the leadership of Ahmed Tinubu.
Despite the deployment of police operatives to the scene, the protesters remained undeterred, asserting that the police were perceived as government agents, incapable of addressing their concerns. Ibrahim Gana, one of the vocal youths, emphasized the dire situation by citing specific examples: "Rice was sold at the cost of N2,000 at Minna markets while maize was N1,000 per module (measure)."
Gana called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to alleviate the mounting hardships faced by the less privileged Nigerians, stressing that the current conditions were becoming increasingly unbearable.
As the protest unfolded, the impassioned voices echoed through the streets of Minna, symbolizing the frustrations of the youth and women grappling with the economic challenges and hardships prevalent in their daily lives. The protest serves as a visible expression of the prevailing discontent over the rising cost of living in the country.
