The Punch Recognized as Champion of Press Freedom and Democracy by House of Representatives

In a commendatory gesture, the House of Representatives has hailed The Punch newspaper as a stalwart defender of press freedom and democracy in Nigeria. The accolades were showered upon the publication and its stakeholders, including founder Chief Olu Aboderin and Managing Director Mr. Adeyeye Joseph, for their unwavering dedication to journalistic excellence.

In a statement issued by Akin Rotimi, spokesperson for the House and Chairman of the Committee on Media and Publicity, the House praised The Punch for its consistent advocacy for accountability and good governance over the years. The message comes as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of The Punch, which was founded in March 1973. The delay in celebration to 2024 was due to the 2023 general election.

The House's message underscored The Punch's pivotal role in upholding the principles of press freedom and democracy since its inception, emphasizing its contributions to promoting democracy and development in Nigeria. Rotimi further highlighted The Punch's legacy of being a voice for the voiceless, holding government officials accountable, and advocating for good governance.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen personally acknowledged The Punch's significant contributions, particularly during challenging times such as the military era when the paper courageously defended press freedom. He described The Punch as a beacon of light in the Nigerian media landscape, championing the cause of press freedom and democracy.

Additionally, the House expressed its commitment to fostering collaboration with The Punch and affirmed its dedication to enacting legislative measures that uphold a free press without infringing on the rights of Nigerians. The statement concluded with warm wishes for The Punch's continued success as it marks its 50th anniversary and beyond.
