Presidency Criticizes NLC Protests, Alleges Political Agenda
The Presidency has rebuked the nationwide protests organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), asserting that some individuals are exploiting the situation for political motives. Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, condemned the demonstrations, labeling them unnecessary during an interview with TVC on Tuesday.
The protests, which unfolded across major cities including Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan, Kano, and others, were prompted by the economic hardships faced by Nigerians, exacerbated by recent policy changes such as the removal of fuel subsidies.
Despite the Nigerian government's efforts to address these challenges, including a last-minute meeting with NLC leadership, the protests proceeded as planned. Ngelale highlighted the lack of unanimity among labor unions, noting the withdrawal of support from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
Meanwhile, President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, led demonstrators to the National Assembly in Abuja, presenting a list of demands aimed at alleviating the economic distress experienced by Nigerians. These demands include the full implementation of welfare provisions, employment generation, and immediate subsidy to farmers to enhance food security.
The protests were not limited to the federal capital, as states like Lagos, Ogun, Kano, and others witnessed significant turnouts. In Lagos, protesters marched from Ikeja to the State House of Assembly, voicing grievances over the prevailing economic conditions and calling for the reversal of fuel subsidies.
While the protests garnered widespread attention, they also drew praise for the peaceful conduct exhibited by both protesters and law enforcement. Notably, the Lagos State Police Command provided refreshments to demonstrators to ease the strain of the long march.
The demonstrations underscore growing concerns over economic hardships in Nigeria, with protesters urging the government to take decisive action to alleviate the suffering of the masses. As the nation grapples with these challenges, dialogue and collaboration between the government and labor unions remain crucial to finding sustainable solutions and restoring economic stability.
