Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution Condemns Killing of 16 Soldiers in Delta State Communal Clash
The recent tragic loss of 16 soldiers in a communal clash in Delta State has sparked condemnation from the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR). The soldiers fell victim to an ambush in the Okuama community, prompting widespread outrage and calls for justice.
Under the supervision of Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the Joint Task Force recovered mutilated bodies of the fallen soldiers. Among the casualties were a commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, 12 soldiers, and one civilian, all of whom lost their lives in the Thursday, March 14, 2024 ambush.
The conflict stems from a longstanding communal land dispute between neighboring communities, exacerbated by previous violence. The tension escalated on January 27, 2024, when youths from Okoloba allegedly ambushed and killed three Okuama youths, reigniting simmering tensions in the area.
In a statement issued by Joseph Ochogwu, Director-General of IPCR, the institute expressed profound sadness over the incident, particularly noting its detrimental impact on the nation's image amid ongoing efforts to combat insecurity. Ochogwu emphasized the need for solidarity and support for security personnel, stressing their crucial role in maintaining national security.
While calling for a thorough investigation into the incident, the IPCR reiterated the importance of professionalism and restraint in handling such conflicts. The institute urged all stakeholders to prioritize peace and dialogue in resolving disputes, underscoring the valor and sacrifice of the fallen soldiers in their service to the nation.
