Genk Forward Tolu Arokodare Faces Online Racism After Penalty Miss
Following his missed penalty in Genk's recent match against Club Brugge in the Belgium Pro League, Nigerian forward Tolu Arokodare has become the target of online racial abuse.
The game, held at the Cegeka Arena, saw Genk facing off against Brugge with hopes of securing a victory to climb higher in the league standings. However, despite Arokodare's notable record of eight goals in 10 starts for Genk this season, his missed penalty in the 18th minute shifted the momentum in favor of Club Brugge, who ultimately secured a 3-0 victory with goals in the 18th, 73rd, and 85th minutes.
Following the defeat, Arokodare was subjected to racial insults on social media platforms by certain individuals expressing their displeasure. Nigerian sport journalist Ojora Babatunde shared screenshots of these incidents, condemning the abuse and underscoring the unacceptable behavior of certain Genk fans.
Babatunde's condemnation emphasized the need to address such incidents, highlighting the importance of fostering a respectful and inclusive environment within the sports community. Arokodare's arrival at Genk in the winter transfer window of 2023 was intended to fill the void left by another Nigerian striker, Paul Onuachu, who moved to Southampton. Since joining Genk, Arokodare has scored 13 goals in 50 appearances, demonstrating his prowess on the field.
