Youths Protest Soaring Food Prices and Economic Hardship in Ibadan and Niger State

In a display of frustration over the skyrocketing cost of food and the deteriorating state of the economy, youths in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, and Niger State took to the streets in protest on Monday.

In Ibadan, protesters congregated around the Mokola area brandishing placards bearing slogans such as ‘End food hike and inflation,’ ‘The poor are starving,’ and ‘Tinubu, don’t forget your promises.’ Chants echoed through the streets as demonstrators voiced their grievances.

Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, armed policemen were present at the scene to maintain order. An anonymous protester emphasized the collective impact of economic hardship, stressing the constitutional right of Nigerians to organize peaceful assemblies and speak out against such challenges.

Barakat, another protester, highlighted the widespread hunger plaguing the nation, lamenting the inability to afford even two square meals a day. Expressing disappointment in the government, particularly towards President Tinubu, Barakat underscored the urgency for corrective measures to address the dire economic situation.

In a parallel demonstration in Niger State, women initially took to the streets to voice their grievances over the biting hardship and rising cost of living. Their protest soon expanded as men and youths joined in, blocking the Minna-Bida Road at the Kpakungu Roundabout and halting vehicular traffic.

The economic strain has intensified following the removal of fuel subsidy by President Tinubu on May 29, 2023, exacerbating the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians.
