Nigerian Lawmaker Raises Concerns Over Genetically Modified Foods, Calls for Suspension
In a recent parliamentary session, a Nigerian lawmaker voiced apprehensions regarding the introduction of genetically modified (GM) foods into the country, citing potential risks to human health, environmental degradation, and food security.
The lawmaker highlighted the versatility of GM technology, noting its capability to incorporate genes with heightened toxicity levels, raising alarms about the potential long-term adverse effects on human health.
Expressing concerns echoed by the public, the lawmaker underscored the lack of rigorous scientific protocols followed by the National Biosafety Management Agency in approving the introduction of GM crops into Nigeria. This, despite the banning of such crops in several countries worldwide, including France, Russia, Germany, China, India, and various European nations, due to safety concerns.
The uncertain long-term impacts of GMO crops on human health, encompassing potential risks such as cancer, antibiotic resistance, allergic reactions, and reproductive issues, prompted calls for precautionary measures.
Of particular concern was the potential relinquishment of control over food security to foreign biotechnology companies, driven primarily by profit motives, potentially exacerbating the nation's dependency on external entities.
Following deliberations, the Nigerian House of Representatives passed resolutions urging the federal government to suspend the introduction of new GM crops pending the completion of a comprehensive investigation by the Committee on Agricultural Production and Services. Additionally, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control was tasked with ensuring proper labeling of GM foods and crops to safeguard consumers' interests.
Furthermore, the House directed the Committee on Agricultural Production and Services to conduct an exhaustive inquiry into the introduction of GM crops by the National Biosafety Management Agency, evaluating the associated health and environmental risks, with a mandate to report back within four weeks.
