Tragedy struck as suspected bandits unleashed a wave of violence in Benue State
resulting in multiple casualties including a soldier. The attacks, which occurred in Kwande and Apa Local Government Areas, left several dead and many others missing.
Reports from locals indicate that the attacks took place between Saturday and Sunday in various communities including Udedeku, Mkoonmom District of Mbaikyor Council Ward, Turan Jato-Aka, and Ochumekwu.
In Kwande, the Udedeku community bore the brunt of the violence with several fatalities reported. Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, the Force Commander of Operations Whirl Stroke, confirmed the loss of one soldier in the Ochumekwu attack in Apa LGA. He stated that the troops responded swiftly, resulting in the death of three assailants and the recovery of weaponry.
While the exact casualty figures in Kwande are yet to be confirmed by authorities, the Operations Whirl Stroke Commander mentioned ongoing clearance operations to eliminate armed foreign bandits in the area. However, Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer, indicated that she only received reports of an invasion in Kwande forest but no information regarding casualties.
