Nigerian Bar Association Releases Results: 888 Candidates Fail Bar Examination
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has released the results of the November 2023 bar examination, revealing that a total of 888 candidates failed the final test.
According to the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, out of the 5,300 candidates who participated in the examination, 4,412 were successful. Among the successful candidates, 251 attained first-class honors.
Speaking at the Call to Bar ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday, Prof. Chiroma highlighted the exceptional performance of the candidates, noting an 83.3% success rate. He expressed pride in the achievement of the candidates and hailed the unprecedented number of first-class graduates.
However, retired Justice of the Supreme Court and Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Mary Peter-Odili, raised concerns about the current state of the judiciary. She cited dwindling public confidence due to conflicting judgments and lawyer indiscipline.
To address these issues, Peter-Odili revealed that the Body of Benchers had formed a committee comprising senior members of the profession. The committee's mandate is to propose solutions to the problem of conflicting judgments, with its recommendations set for consideration and implementation.
Addressing the new lawyers, Peter-Odili emphasized the importance of upholding integrity and avoiding corrupt practices that could tarnish the image of the judiciary.
The ceremony also saw the admission of notable individuals into the legal profession, including former Governor of Rivers State and immediate-past Minister of Transportation, Chief Rotimi Amaechi.
As Nigeria's legal landscape evolves, the successful candidates are poised to contribute to the legal profession with their skills and integrity, while efforts continue to address challenges facing the judiciary.
