Highlife Music Icon Kabaka Passes Away at 77


Godwin Opara, widely known as Kabaka, the legendary figure in highlife music, who made a remarkable return to the spotlight with his celebrated "Abialam" album in September 2023, has passed away at the age of 77.


Derda Promotions, Kabaka's management team, has confirmed the demise of the influential musician, who revolutionized the highlife genre, on Thursday.


Amarachi Anyanwu, the Chief Operating Officer of Derda Promotions, conveyed the somber news in a statement released on Friday morning.


In the statement, she expressed, "Derda Promotions mourns the loss of our esteemed artist, Godwin Kabaka Opara, a pioneer who transformed the landscape of Highlife music, on March 21st, 2024." His departure comes just six months following his triumphant return to the highlife music scene. Kabaka wasn't just a talented highlife performer; he was also a revered songwriter and guitarist, whose tunes resonated deeply with countless fans.


In 1973, he co-founded The Oriental Brothers International Band, a powerhouse in Highlife music renowned for its socially conscious lyrics, musical prowess, and authentic style that captivated audiences across Africa and beyond. Transitioning into a solo career in 1976, Kabaka formed The Kabaka International Guitar Band, continuing to produce top-tier Highlife music, with fourteen albums to his credit, including hits like 'Mangala Special'.


Demonstrating his versatility and innovation, Kabaka explored Ezebongo rhythms, pushing the boundaries of musical expression. He later collaborated with The Imo City Band, cementing his legacy as an unyielding figure in Highlife music.


His comeback in September 2023, marked by the release of 'The Return of Kabaka' album, amassed over a million streams and earned a place among the top 100 albums worldwide. Kabaka's influence on Highlife music and his legacy as an icon will endure through generations.
