Journalists and Activists Detained by Military During Planned Protest in Delta State
Tensions rose in Effurun, Delta State, as soldiers from the Nigerian Army 3 Battalion detained Mr. Dele Fasan, the South-South Bureau Chief of Galaxy Television, and human rights activist Comrade Israel Joe during a planned labor protest in the area.
According to witnesses, Fasan was arrested for recording video clips of the protest at the DSC roundabout in Effurun. The soldiers reportedly subjected him to brutality, striking him with the butt of their guns. Despite the presence of a police team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, Fasan was detained until intervention from police authorities led to his release.
Fasan recounted the incident, expressing gratitude for the swift intervention of DCP Aina Adesola, who ensured his release. He also mentioned that Major AE Ohegbe, the Army Commander, apologized for the incident after his release.
Similarly, Comrade Israel Joe was taken into custody following a rift with other activists, including Kelvin Ejumudo, prompting security operatives to intervene and detain him.
The planned protest, however, did not proceed as scheduled, as critical stakeholders convened on Thursday night and decided to cancel the demonstration due to concerns over potential unrest.
Speaking to reporters, Kelvin Ejumudo, the National Secretary of Human Rights Protection Congress, emphasized the need to avoid protests to prevent the loss of lives and property. He urged government officials, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governors, to address the pressing issues of unemployment and economic instability.
DCP Aina Adesola, who was dispatched by the Commissioner of Police to maintain peace at the scene, reiterated the importance of peacekeeping efforts amidst heightened tensions.
The incident highlights the delicate balance between the right to protest and maintaining public order, underscoring the challenges faced by journalists and activists in advocating for social change.
