Former Kwara State Governor Granted Bail by Federal High Court in Ilorin
A Federal High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has granted bail to Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, a former governor of the state, who was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of fraudulent transactions during his tenure.
The ex-governor was accused by the anti-graft agency of involvement in fraudulent activities amounting to billions of naira during his time in office. Among the allegations, it was claimed that he chartered private jets using funds earmarked for the security and operational expenses of the state government, totaling N1,610,730,500.00.
Justice Evelyn Anyadike presiding over the case outlined eight conditions for Ahmed's bail. While disclosing the court's decision, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), the EFCC's prosecutor, stated that the bail request was granted with these conditions.
Kehinde Eleja (SAN), the defendant's counsel, expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment of his client, emphasizing that the prosecution of the former governor lies within the court's discretion. He acknowledged the court's support of the defendant's plea.
The case has been adjourned to April 29 and 30 for further proceedings, as directed by the judge.
Ahmed's release on bail marks a development in the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as governor of Kwara State.
